NATURE’S MIGRAINE-PREVENTING POWERHOUSE

One of the more than 40 compounds in the leaf is parthenolide, shown to ease smooth muscle spasms and prevent the constriction of blood vessels in the brain, one of the leading causes of migraines.

Studies showing benefits from feverfew used a freeze-dried formulation of 50 to 100 mg daily, typically standardized as 0.2 to 0.35 percent parthenolide content. In some countries such as Canada parthenolide consistency is requires for feverfew products. Sometimes feverfew is blended with riboflavin (vitamin B2) and Magnesium, as these have also been shown to reduce migraine frequency.

OBTAINING AND USING

 Feverfew us an easy-to grow perennial, which provides a profusion of flowers year after year with only minimal attention. Commercially, feverfew products are sold in most health food stores.

Fresh leaf: Two leaves chewed daily to ward off migraines is the traditional treatment. Warning: the fresh leaf can cause mouth ulcers.

Capsules: Dosage is 50 to 100 mg daily. Check manufacturer’s instructions.

 PRECAUTIONS: Clinical trials have shown feverfew to be safe and well tolerated. Anyone experiencing mouth ulcers from chewing the leaves should discontinue use. Pregnant women should not use feverfew.
